Eco-friendly food challenge

Welcome to our Eco-Friendly Food Challenge!

This set of challenges was designed to be completed over four weeks, however, the challenges can be done as separate activities and in the timeframe you choose. Each one of these four challenges focuses on a different area of environmentally sustainable eating and has an aim and step-by-step instructions to help you achieve that aim.

The Eco-Food challenges are:

  • Week 1 - to identify and trial strategies to reduce the amount of food packaging and waste that goes to landfill
  • Week 2 – to find out the fruit and vegetables that are grown locally and when they are in season and to plan to use these and use the worksheet provided. If you live in South East Queensland, print out a copy of our South East Queensland Local Food Wheel (A3 Version (big) or A4 Version), view the electronic version and check out the seasonal recipes.
  • Week 3 - to conduct a pantry audit to find out where your food comes from.  What percentage of your total pantry items are imported? Although not always the case, imported food items generally have a larger carbon foot print, especially when compared to foods that could be purchased fresh for local suppliers. Focussing on Australian grown and produced items also increases our national food security.
  • Week 4 – to browse suitable legume recipes and to try two of them during the week.

Over the next four weeks you should significantly reduce your impact on the environment by following these weekly food challenges.
We are interested in knowing how you go with the challenges. Please contact us if you would like to provide feedback on any of the challenges.

The Eco-friendly Food (Group) Challenge 2012

A Group Challenge was conducted in April 2012. This included 270 participants. Feedback was great and many participants reported major changes in their behaviour. Here is a summary report on the Challenge. You can also look at the blog comments of participants on the various challenges on our home page.

If you are interested in running a group challenge with your friends or in your workplace, please contact us and we will be very happy to help.
