Food sustainability school newsletter articles

Not only does climate change have a significant impact on food production, but food production and food manufacturing has a significant impact on climate change.

Food sustainability is about how our everyday food choices can minimise harm to the environment so that adequate food can be produced to feed the population.

The Department of Education and Training (DET) has developed the Earth Smart Environmental Sustainability Strategic plan (2008- 2012) that aims to contribute to lifestyle and environmental protection. This strategic plan supports Queensland schools to become sustainable schools and implement a School Environment Management Plan (SEMP).  These provide schools with a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the effects that our everyday food choices have on the environment.

Newsletter articles have been developed by Queensland Health community nutritionists to complement what is happening within schools by providing the greater school community with information on food sustainability. The articles are formatted to be easily cut and pasted from Microsoft Word into school newsletters and are designed to be published according to the months of the year; with a specific school newsletter article for each week of the school year. These articles are particularly relevant to south-east Queensland, as locally available foods will differ for other areas. You may like to set a project for students to investigate what is available in your local area.
